Positive Steps Outdoors- Social Enterprise of the Month Case Study- June Edition

Mission

Facilitate self care by enabling people to escape to outdoor destinations, engaging in ‘green therapy’ collectively to benefit their mental and physical wellbeing.

Philosophy

We are passionate about engaging with the natural setting and history of our forested, moorland and upland destinations. We know how taking time to explore these destinationsbrings people together, families – friends, work colleagues and strangers alike – refreshes lives, focuses minds and thinking and helps recalibrate priorities like nothing else.

We understand how the variety these destinations offer provide opportunities to challenge oneself, to rise to those challenges, to de-stress at times of pressure, to see issues more clearly, to connect with others, to communicate more openly, to benefit from enhanced self esteem and physical and mental wellbeing and to gain a deeper appreciation of the environment.

Making a difference

Our long term aim is to play a part in promoting positive mental and physical health across communities.

Green Therapy

Green Therapy, also known as nature therapy or ecotherapy, involves connecting with nature to improve mental and physical well-being. It leverages the natural environment to promote healing, reduce stress, and enhance overall health. Here’s how it works and its key benefits:

Mental Health Improvement

  • Reduced Stress: Nature has a calming effect, helping to lower cortisol levels and reduce stress.
  • Enhanced Mood: Exposure to natural light and fresh air can boost serotonin levels, improving mood and reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety.
  • Increased Focus: Time in nature can improve attention spans and cognitive function, beneficial for those with ADHD.

Physical Health Benefits

  • Boosted Immunity: Regular exposure to natural environments can enhance immune system function.
  • Lower Blood Pressure: Nature walks have been shown to lower blood pressure and heart rate, promoting cardiovascular health.
  • Improved Fitness: Outdoor activities like hiking and gardening provide physical exercise, helping to maintain a healthy weight and improve overall fitness.

Emotional and Social Well-being

  • Connection to Others: Participating in group activities in nature fosters social connections and reduces feelings of isolation.
  • Sense of Purpose: Engaging with nature can provide a sense of purpose and fulfilment, enhancing emotional well-being.
