Social Enterprise of the Month – August 2025: Cairde na Cille CIC

At Social Enterprise NI, we’re passionate about showcasing the incredible work of social enterprises across Northern Ireland. Every month, we highlight an organisation making a real difference in their community – and for August 2025, we’re proud to shine a light on Cairde na Cille CIC, a Belfast-based social enterprise that is breathing new life into one of the city’s most historic landmarks.

Preserving Belfast’s Oldest Graveyard

Founded in December 2022, Cairde na Cille CIC has taken on the inspiring task of transforming Friar’s Bush Graveyard – the oldest Christian burial ground in Belfast – from a site of neglect into a vibrant, community-focused cultural hub.

This ancient graveyard, steeped in history and heritage, holds centuries of stories within its walls. Thanks to the dedication of the Cairde na Cille team and their volunteers, the site is once again a place of learning, reflection, and cultural celebration.

Heritage Meets Community Impact

As a social enterprise, Cairde na Cille CIC operates with a clear mission:

  • To preserve and protect Belfast’s oldest graveyard.

  • To offer cultural and educational experiences for locals and visitors alike.

  • To create opportunities for community connection, volunteering, and skills development.

From immersive walking tours to seasonal events like Samhain (Halloween) and St Patrick’s Day celebrations, the team has found creative ways to make heritage accessible and engaging for everyone. Their work not only honours the past but also builds a stronger, more connected community today.

A Volunteer-Led Success Story

One of the most inspiring aspects of Cairde na Cille CIC is how much they’ve achieved without regular council funding. Through volunteer dedication, local support, and grants from organisations such as Foras na Gaeilge, they’ve:

  • Restored over 70 grave monuments.

  • Delivered educational programmes for schools and community groups.

  • Created a welcoming space where people can learn, share stories, and feel part of something bigger.

Every penny earned through tours, events, and donations is reinvested directly into the preservation and development of Friar’s Bush Graveyard. This is the true spirit of a social enterprise – balancing social impact with sustainable business practices.

Why This Work Matters for Northern Ireland

Heritage sites like Friar’s Bush Graveyard are irreplaceable parts of Northern Ireland’s history. Without the work of social enterprises like Cairde na Cille CIC, many could fall into further neglect.

By combining cultural preservation with community engagement, Cairde na Cille is creating:

  • Opportunities for local volunteering in Belfast.

  • Enhanced community wellbeing through shared heritage experiences.

  • Economic and tourism benefits by attracting visitors to the city.

It’s a perfect example of how Northern Ireland social enterprises can drive positive change that lasts for generations.
