What is Vacant to Vibrant?
The Vacant to Vibrant scheme aims to reduce vacancy, tackle dereliction, and support local independent businesses by bringing unused properties back into productive use across Belfast city centre and local neighbourhoods.
Who Can Apply?
The scheme is open to:
- Start-ups and independent retailers
- Social enterprises
- Cultural and voluntary organisations
- Property owners transforming vacant spaces
Eligible properties must be located either in Belfast city centre or other areas within Belfast’s boundary.
Grant Options
Applicants can access capital grants at three levels:
- Up to £2,500
- Up to £15,000
- Up to £25,000
Funding can cover:
- External upgrades like shop front improvements, signage, and lighting
- Interior works to make spaces fit for occupation, including access enhancements, furniture, and equipment
- Transformations for long-term occupancy to diversify unused spaces
A 10% match funding contribution is required from successful applicants.
City Centre Success Stories
To date, 32 grants have reanimated 21 historic properties, supporting businesses like bakeries, gyms, charities, and art galleries. This has created 125+ direct employment opportunities, boosting diversity and vibrancy in Belfast.
Citywide Expansion
The scheme now includes areas outside the city centre with £500,000 in new funding from the Department for Communities and UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Applications for citywide properties are processed on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to properties with prominent frontage.
